Look Back, Look Ahead, Have A Happy New Year!

Another year is behind us. And we have made another trip around the Sun.

If someone were to look at us from far far away in the universe, it would not sound like a big deal. Ask someone if they should be excited about a New Year on Mercury every 88 days, or Venus every 225 days, or Mars every 687 days, you may get the same answer. From such a distance, a span of one year is almost insignificant.

Yet, a lot has happened in our lives and in the lives of our loved ones. In some ways, that is our world and that is the journey we take each year.

Now is the time to sit back and reflect upon this journey as we begin to look ahead. In the spirit of reflection and looking ahead, I have collected a few responses from my Twitter friends. Enjoy and feel free to leave a comment sharing your thoughts.

On reaching a nutrition milestone with my child:

  • @hoola – getting my little boy on solids and my 2yo girl on brocolli and (weirdly) sushi
  • @MomMostTraveled -  Needed my 3 yo to take fish oil supplements, so taught him to swallow a nordic naturals gel capsule this year
  • @kidappeal – I’m happy to say after a year of crying every time I served soup big boo now eats soup with relish.

and here are ours (@TwinToddlersDad):

  • Our twins developed a good taste for fruits like strawberry, grapes, banana, apples, oranges, pears, kiwi, blueberries, blackberries
  • They got in the habit of sitting down and eating breakfast – cereal with milk, or toast with cream cheese/peanut butter, vitamin D and calcium rich orange juice
  • Although a little slow, they are beginning to like veggies such as green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, beets, spinach and kale in soup

On a nutrition goals for my child in 2009:

  • @justwemoms – How to get my 13 month old daughter to gain weight, light eater, fast metabolism
  • @ParentingAuthor – Have less candy and sweets in the house. Kids are always asking for them
  • @Ronisweigh – Reduce candy consumption
  • @kidappeal – Little boo is still not eating soup.  He’s got the rest of winter this year to practice and perhaps by the time the cooler weather rolls around again he’ll be a convert too.

and here are ours (@TwinToddlersDad):

  • My son has a sweet tooth. We will work hard to reduce his sugar consumption
  • Our twins have discovered chips! We need to switch them to baked pita chips instead
  • Increase the veggie consumption, particularly carrots and broccoli

What are your goals for your child’s nutrition in 2009?

Here are my nutrition goals for my toddling twins this year:

    1. wean them from nursing to organic soymilk.
    2. get them to STOP eating MY sushi. (I suppose it is time to order them their own rolls. No not raw fish kind!)
    3. Add more home grown veggies/ fruits to their diets (less grocery store bought items is our family goal this year)
    4. Cut out unhealthy additions to their diet (thanks dad and grandma for the introductions). (IE. cheezits, soda, potato chips.)

Thinking about going back to vegan for myself, possibly the kiddos.. We shall see.

I think if we could all give up soda pop, including the kids of course, for one year (or forever!), we might be able to drink a LOT more H20. Yeah!

I want them to eat what we eat, and not cook two meals. We’re getting there…

    Happy New Year!
