great article, it's nice to have fellow steward of good health out there talking about this issue. i get frustrated at how much it costs me to feed my family the most nutritious foods i can find, but many families can't make that choice. my food budget is justified at how much $ in healthcare our family will save over a lifetime.

Thank you for this insightful article. I agree that we need to be working diligently to stop this epidemic. I find it irksome that it is less expensive to feed a family on high carb, high fat, high sodium foods than it is to provide them with fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. No wonder so many are becoming unhealthy!

It is also about getting out and moving! Here in Maine we have an inovative program that provides laptop computers to all seventh graders. This is great...our kids need to be trained in the technology that is such a big part of today's world. BUT! Kids don't move anymore. They don't 'go outside and play'. They talk on their cell phones, play video games, email friends... none of these things will help them maintain a healthy body or lifestyle.

In my young adult novel, Grumble Bluff, I touch on the issue of childhood obesity and how if effects the life of a middle school girl. I hope that through my humorous and touching tale, I can send a message to children. There IS hope, and you CAN lose the weight. You can also feel good! And you can feel good ABOUT YOURSELF, too.

It's really hard to imagine that this generation's children may not die sooner than their parents. When you mention states failing in obesity, the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. I'm sure there's more of a direct correlation between overweight parents and their obese children.
